Scientific Acceleration with Agentic Coding in 2026

In the past month we have surpassed a critical threshold with the capabilities of agentic coding models. What previously sounded like science fiction has now become reality, and I don’t believe any of us are ready for what is to come. In this blog post I share a summary of the breakthrough I am referring to, I give an insight into how I use agents to accelerate my research, and I make some predictions for the year. I Prompt, Therefore I Am: Is Artificial Intelligence the End of Human Thought? 

Welcome to a slightly different blog post than usual. Today I am sharing an insight into my life at Keble College, Oxford. I am the Chair of Cheese and Why?, which is a talk series we host in our common room during term. The format is simple: I provide cheese and wine, and a guest speaker provides the “why”—a short, thought-provoking talk to spark discussion for the evening.

To kick off the series, I opened with the question of artificial intelligence replacing human thought. I am sharing my spoken essay below. The aim of a Cheese and Why? talk is to generate questions rather than deliver answers, so I hope you’ll forgive me if what follows doesn’t quite adhere to the rigorous structure of a traditional Oxford humanities essay. For best reading, I recommend a glass of claret and a wedge of Stilton, to recreate the full Oxford common-room experience.

GPT-5 achieves state-of-the-art chemical intelligence

I have run ChemIQ (our chemical reasoning benchmark) on GPT-5. The model achieves state-of-the-art performance with substantial improvements in the ability to interpret SMILES strings. Read my analysis and initial findings below. Scroll to the end for some cool demos.

All chemistry LLM enthusiasts were treated to a pleasant surprise on Friday when Greg Brockman tweeted that ChatGPT now has access to RDKit. I’ve spent a few hours playing with the updated models and I have summarized some of my findings in this blog.
