Agentic AI refers to AI systems that can pursue a goal, make decisions, take actions, and then adapt based on the results.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike traditional AI models that mostly answer questions or classify information, an agentic system can:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>break a task into steps;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>run experiments or simulations;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>evaluate outcomes; &amp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>decide what to do next.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This makes Agentic AI particularly powerful\u00a0in areas where autonomy and multiple step tasks are\u00a0required. This includes across\u00a0research,\u00a0engineering\u00a0and innovation, where rapid iteration and autonomous exploration can significantly speed up discovery.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Agentic systems act autonomously, so risks extend beyond model outputs&nbsp;and with higher potential&nbsp;harms. Challenges include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>ensuring safety and reliability of autonomous\u00a0decisions;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>preventing \u201challucinated\u201d or unsafe\u00a0actions;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>coordinating oversight and\u00a0accountability; &amp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>managing cyber-physical interactions in labs,\u00a0factories\u00a0and robotics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite all of the recent attention paid to LLM-based agentic frameworks, it&#8217;s worth bearing in mind the decades of work of Prof. Michael Wooldridge, who has been working on agents since the late 1980s:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/kclpure.kcl.ac.uk\/portal\/en\/publications\/large-language-models-miss-the-multi-agent-mark\/\">Large language models miss the multi-agent mark<\/a> La Malfa, G.
