This decision is more than just a perk, it\u2019s a signal. One of the world\u2019s leading universities is openly acknowledging that generative AI will be central to the academic experience of its students. But what does this mean for learning? For education? For scholarship itself?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">To frame this question, it is worth beginning with a macro view: Mary Meeker\u2019s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bondcap.com\/report\/pdf\/Trends_Artificial_Intelligence.pdf\">AI Trends Report<\/a> (2025)<\/em> argues that AI is accelerating the transformation of knowledge work, pushing tasks once reserved for experts into more automated or semi-automated regimes. We must examine both the philosophy of learning and the evidence that is beginning to emerge. UK Higher Education Policy Institute&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hepi.ac.uk\/reports\/student-generative-ai-survey-2025\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hepi.ac.uk\/reports\/student-generative-ai-survey-2025\">Generative AI survey (2025)<\/a> shows that <strong>92% of students already use AI tools in some form, with 88% using them for assessments<\/strong>. Students and professionals alike are increasingly relying on generative systems to explain, summarize, and ideate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.blopig.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/image-5.png?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"625\" height=\"370\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.blopig.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/image-5.png?resize=625%2C370&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13246\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.blopig.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/image-5.png?w=2196&amp;ssl=1 2196w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.blopig.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/image-5.png?resize=300%2C178&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.blopig.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/image-5.png?w=1250&amp;ssl=1 1250w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.blopig.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/image-5.png?w=1875&amp;ssl=1 1875w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Mary Meeker&#8217;s AI Trends Report (2025)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">And so we arrive at a tension: <strong>Is AI a friend or foe to learning?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In an excellent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aipolicyperspectives.com\/p\/human-learning-in-the-age-of-machine\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.aipolicyperspectives.com\/p\/human-learning-in-the-age-of-machine\">thought piece<\/a> (from which the name of this blog is borrowed), the AI policy writer Tom Rachman argues that historically technology has been for making what\u2019s hard easier. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\">And learning is hard, even aversive. Yet the practice is not like doing the laundry, where we lose nothing by cramming filthy socks into a machine, and retrieving them clean. <em><strong>Learning is laborious or there is no learning.<\/strong><\/em> And labor is impossible to motivate if we don\u2019t see its purpose.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">If AI can instantly synthesize complex material, does this liberate the student to focus on higher-order thinking, or does it risk eroding the habits of careful reading and slow deliberation? The very qualities that once defined scholarship: patience, persistence, interpretive depth, may be transformed by technologies that privilege speed and convenience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">He posits that the emotive response might be to condemn technology, as if it can be stopped. But more pragmatic is to consider what it reveals&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.blopig.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/image-8.png?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"625\" height=\"242\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.blopig.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/image-8.png?resize=625%2C242&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13252\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.blopig.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/image-8.png?resize=1024%2C396&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.blopig.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/image-8.png?resize=300%2C116&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.blopig.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/image-8.png?resize=768%2C297&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.blopig.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/image-8.png?resize=624%2C241&amp;ssl=1 624w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.blopig.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/image-8.png?w=1030&amp;ssl=1 1030w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41599-025-04787-y\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41599-025-04787-y\">meta-analysis of 51 studies<\/a> conducted between 2022\u20132025 shows that ChatGPT has a <strong>large positive impact on learning performance<\/strong> along with a moderately positive effect on enhancing learning perception and fostering higher-order thinking. This research suggests that ChatGPT can most effectively enhance learning when it is deliberately embedded within educational frameworks, used consistently across diverse courses and grade levels, and integrated into active, problem-based learning. Rather than serving as a shortcut, it should function as a flexible tutor, partner, and tool, scaffolded by sound pedagogy and sustained over time to foster deeper and more stable learning outcomes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The introduction of free pro-level ChatGPT subscription at Oxford and other educational institutions is not just about access; it\u2019s about values. Are universities signaling that fluency with these tools is now part of literacy itself? Or are they conceding that resistance is futile?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Mary Meeker\u2019s data show that adoption is already nearly universal. The real question is whether we will let AI deepen human learning or allow it to hollow it out. As we move forward, the challenge is not to master AI, but to master <em>ourselves<\/em> in relation to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>If you like, I can now produce a polished version ready to publish (with headings, pull-quotes, references) or suggest revisions for different audiences (faculty, students, policymakers).
